First, it's important to...
STOP BLAMING YOURSELF
Don't misunderstand me, I'm all
for taking personal responsibility, but the fitness industry has
a long track record of selling garbage "solutions". Infomercial
gadgets. Fad diets. Creams, pills, potions and lotions
each touted as 'the NEW magical formula' you can't live without.
Then there are the health clubs and their
unbreakable contracts and outrageous fees. What do they
actually give you?
Sure, they provide a collection
of equipment, but how are you supposed to know what to do
with all of it in order to achieve your personal fitness goals?
All of these so-called "solutions" use slick
marketing tactics designed to take advantage of your
'weakness'... to hit you at your deepest emotional levels... to
give you a temporary feeling of success - even if it's
vicariously through the 'achievements' of a paid actor's
"testimonial" so you'll pull out your credit card and buy
something you'll likely never use.
It's hard to avoid being pulled in to such a
well-oiled marketing machine.
I realize the truth doesn't sound nearly as glamorous as the late-night infomercials
would have you believe, but if you've ever made your "3 easy payments" only
to find the 'perfect' gadget quickly gets moved to the back of the closet (along
with your pile of previous "get-fit-quick" purchases), you already know
there is no overnight solution.

fitness industry, and Joe is
one of the most forward thinking trainers around.”

Let's Not Forget About Typical Personal
Training Services
I'd only be kidding myself if I was to
suggest a personal trainer is the answer for everyone.
There's a definite learning curve that needs to be experienced
first hand. Most people simply aren't ready for the level of commitment
personal training calls for (assuming you actually want
meaningful results).
Like any industry or service
provider, I'm sure you can understand not all trainers are the
same - but I'm not writing this to 'bash' my colleagues in the
personal training industry. Why? Because I'm a
pragmatist - if something works for you, I couldn't be happier.
As they say, different strokes for different folks...
For
example, if
you lost tons of weight on a fad diet, no matter how much I may
not like certain aspects of that diet, the fact is, you
found a way to lose the
weight that you wanted to - and no matter what I
say, I won't be able to convince you otherwise. But there
are some common mistakes you might wish to avoid if you're
considering a trainer...
The FIRST Mistake When Hiring A
Personal Trainer:
PAYING
BY THE HOUR
Fitness is a game that you need to play 24/7 if
you want to be successful. No matter how great, fun or
sweaty your workouts may be, one hour of ‘good’ can't possibly
un-do 23 hours of ‘bad’.
This doesn’t mean you can’t ever have pizza
and a beer (or 2) again. Nor does it mean you need to pack up
your belongings and move into the
nearest health club. Though it certainly would suggest that the ‘hourly
approach’ isn’t going to cut it if you're serious about
your fitness goals...
At the most basic level, your ability to succeed at your
fitness goals will be dependent on just two things:
1) the quality of your plan
2) your ability to follow through with it
But would you really want a
personal trainer to follow you around everywhere you go?
Even if you do want THAT level of
accountability, across the U.S., personal trainers charge
anything between $35 and $400 for an HOUR
of their time, so who can actually afford it?
Why Is A Personal Trainer
AGAINST The 'Hourly' Model?
This traditional arrangement may work just fine
and dandy for the run-of-the-mill personal trainer, but I'm
smart enough to know it's not about ME. This is all about
YOU and your goals!
Can you
lose any meaningful weight in an hour?
Is it likely
that you’ll fit (and have breathing room!) in that “special outfit” in
the next 60
minutes?
Will you be
able to run faster, jump
higher or otherwise
outperform your competitors in your chosen sport(s)
after only
3,600 seconds of training?
If you are only one hour away from your
ultimate goal, maybe a single personal training session is all
you really need. But unless you are truly genetically gifted,
chances are it’s going to take more than an hour of your time to achieve the
body of your dreams.

Mistake #2:
Paying for 'Variety'
Believe me, I 'get it'... hitting the gym day after day
after day can become monotonous - especially if you aren't getting the
results to show for it. But are you working out because you enjoy
the activity - or because you want the results of
that activity?
I find it funny (and at the same time, frustrating) whenever
I hear people 'brag' how their trainer never has 'em
do the same workout twice, even though they haven't made progress for months.
It's fine and good if you go to the gym only for
"the scene", but if you want measurable results, you also need a measurable
training plan... and this means you need CONSTANTS to
go along with all of those other variables. Sadly, most personal
trainers don't even get this, so they're limited to using 'random' workouts.
(and random workouts can only produce random results)
My advice: If you're simply looking for something
"different", pick up any fitness magazine at your local newsstand
(it's what a lot of personal trainers do!). There's sure to be a
'workout of the month' you haven't done yet.
Mistake #3:
Expecting A Personal Trainer
to Wave a "Magic Wand"
Maybe I'm missing the boat by
neglecting the weight loss industry's #1 marketing strategy, but I just
can't get myself to say, "you won't even need to break a sweat to get the
body of your dreams" with a straight face.
There
are no "miracles" without effort.
It takes work.
Focus.
Commitment.
A solid, proven plan of
action.
But you already know that.
What you might NOT know is
that there are legitimate
short-cuts. Contrary to what most "experts" will tell you, there
is a time and place for a "quick-fix" and a time for a more
conservative, long-term approach. The 'magic' is in knowing when and
where each should be applied.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU ALL OF THIS?
There are only so many hours in the day - and as much as I'd
like to be able to help everyone from East Grand Rapids to West Ottawa

"The greatest compliment you can give a
trainer is to say that he gets his clients great results fast - but
that's
the
understatement of the year when I describe Joe Stankowski.
I have personally seen him work wonders on clients, transforming their
bodies in short periods of time and leaving them 100% satisfied with the
outcome. While his proficiency in writing programs and working with
people is unquestionable, he's also one of the great idea men and
forward-thinkers in his industry. Incredibly ambitious and an absolute
workhorse, Joe is also a gentleman to boot, and he'll always be in high
demand at Men's Fitness."
